High Security Locks

You have lost count of how many people have had a key to your house over the years: cleaners, a contractor, a former partner, the previous owner's family. The lock still works, but you no longer know who else it works for.

High Security Locks

In plain words

A high security cylinder is rated by independent laboratory testing that times how long it holds out against picking, impressioning, drilling, prying and wrenching. The lock body and deadbolt carry a separate hardware grade for strength, cycle life and finish. A locksmith reads those ratings for you and matches them to your door, because a rating on the box means nothing if the door frame is thin or the bolt barely enters the jamb. The visit usually ends with a heavier deadbolt, a reinforced strike fastened into the framing and a cylinder whose keys cannot be copied at a kiosk.

Sound familiar?

The pharmacy stockroom, the server closet or the cash office is protected by the same ordinary cylinder as the staff washroom. One lost key on a lanyard would open all of them.

How the visit goes

Welland

How the visit goes

  1. Winter, weather and daily use

A door on a farmhouse porch, a condo corridor and a shop on a busy street each see different wear. The locksmith asks how the door behaves in cold weather, whether the key has ever frozen or stuck, how many times a day it is used and whether it slams behind people. High-security cylinders with sidebars and telescopic pins are precise mechanisms and appreciate a door that closes true and a keyway kept clean. The recommendation may include a weather cover for an exposed cylinder, a closer adjustment or a hinge repair so the new hardware lives a long life.

  2. Fitting a heavier deadbolt

When the existing deadbolt is light or worn, the locksmith fits a graded deadbolt through the same bore where possible. The bolt throws a full inch and carries a hardened steel pin that turns under a saw blade, and the housing keeps part of the bolt supported against a kick. The latch is set in the edge bore with the correct backset, the exterior housing and interior thumb-turn are joined through the door with the long screws, and the final tightening is done by hand so nothing strips. The bolt is then thrown with the door open and closed to confirm it extends completely.

  3. A key plan that survives staff changes

For a business, the handover includes a key schedule showing every cylinder, every key number and who holds it. When someone leaves, their key comes back and is struck off; if it does not come back, you know exactly which doors it opened and can decide whether one cylinder or several should be repinned. Because the keyway is restricted, a departed employee cannot quietly keep a copy. New hires are issued a numbered key against a signature. The plan lives in a folder or spreadsheet, and the locksmith keeps a matching record so the two can be reconciled whenever you like.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Cylinder rating and format

A patented residential cylinder, a laboratory-rated commercial cylinder and an interchangeable core sit at different points on the scale, and the format that fits your present hardware decides which lines are available.

  2. 2Retiring the old keyway

If other doors stay on the old key for now, they may need rekeying so an unknown copy has nowhere to go; that is additional cylinder work alongside the upgrade.

  3. 3Commercial lock bodies

Heavy-duty deadbolts, mortise locks, narrow-stile deadlocks and cylinder guards for storefront and warehouse doors are heavier hardware than residential deadbolts and priced as such.

High Security Locks: questions

Will my door look different afterwards?

Barely. A high security cylinder sits in the same place as the old one and is usually distinguished only by a different keyway shape and sometimes a hardened collar. A graded deadbolt is a standard-looking deadbolt in your chosen finish. The reinforced strike is longer than the plate it replaces and the wrap-around reinforcer, if used, shows as a neat metal band on the door edge. The difference is felt when you lock up, not seen from the street.

Can a hardware store or kiosk copy my new key?

No. The blank for a patented keyway is distributed only through the manufacturer's network to locksmiths who hold the system, and the side milling or angled cuts need a machine set up for that line. A kiosk would have neither the blank nor the cut. Extra keys come through your locksmith, cut from code, once an authorised person has approved the order. That routine is a small inconvenience compared with never knowing who has a copy.

What is the difference between restricted and patented keys?

A restricted keyway is one the manufacturer supplies to a limited set of dealers, so blanks are harder to obtain but not legally protected. A patented key design is protected by a patent for a fixed term, and making or selling the blank without permission is unlawful during that time. Patented systems give the firmer control; restricted ones give a useful step up. The locksmith explains which your chosen line uses and when any patent expires.
