Master Key System Design
The new wing was built with its own brand of cylinder, so the two-year-old keys from the original building do not open a single door in the addition. Staff are now carrying two separate key rings just to move around one workplace.
Master Key System Design
In plain words
Beyond convenience, master key system design is a security decision. It sets out who can duplicate a key, how many levels of access exist, and what scope the chart assigns to a lost key at each level, from one door up to the whole property for a top master. A restricted or patented keyway is often part of the answer, since it cuts down on copies being made anywhere other than through the record the owner controls. The result is a system where access matches role, duplication is tracked, and every missing key's designed scope is already known rather than guessed at afterward.
How the visit goesOn the warehouse floor, a shift supervisor's key opens the loading dock, the tool crib and the manager's office, though only the dock is really part of the job. Nobody planned it that way; the key was simply copied from whichever one was closest at hand.

How the visit goes
Where a sub-master genuinely earns its place
Not every group of doors needs its own level. The assessment looks for places where a sub-master is a real convenience, such as a department, a floor, or a set of storage rooms used by the same small team, rather than adding levels for their own sake. A hierarchy with more levels than the business actually uses is harder to manage and easier to get wrong later, so this stage is as much about deciding what not to build as it is about what to include, before any pins are cut or any key blanks are ordered.
Marking and cutting the actual keys
Keys are cut to the bittings set out in the key schedule and marked in a way that identifies the holder's role or level rather than the door or address it opens, so a key found on its own gives away as little as possible about the building it belongs to. Quantities match what was agreed during the assessment, with each one logged by serial against the person or role receiving it. Blanks for a restricted keyway are cut only against the owner's authorization, keeping future duplication inside the same controlled record.
Handing the record to whoever administers it next
The chart, the issuance log and any spare keys are handed to a named administrator, not left as loose paperwork or scattered across whoever happened to be present. If that role changes hands, custody of the record moves with it deliberately, along with a signed acknowledgement of what is being transferred, so the system's history does not quietly disappear along with the person who used to manage it.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Sub-master levels beyond the basics
One or two sub-master levels are typical for most properties. A more elaborate hierarchy, with several sub-masters covering overlapping departments or floors, takes longer to design correctly and test, and that additional design and testing time is reflected in the quote.
2Number of doors and levels involved
A single office with one change key and no sub-master is a simpler project than a multi-floor property with several departments and a top-level master. The quote reflects how many doors are assessed, how many levels are designed, and how many cylinders are pinned to match those levels.
3Administrator training and handover time
Walking the named administrator through the chart, the issuance process and how to handle a future lost key or new hire takes a defined amount of time on the day of handover, and a more detailed walkthrough for a larger, multi-level system takes longer than a simple one.
Master Key System Design: questions
What does key control actually mean?
It means knowing, at any time, how many keys exist for a given door or level, who holds each one, and how a new copy would be authorized. A master key system supports key control by design, since keys are marked by role, logged by serial, and cut only against the chart, rather than copied informally whenever someone asks for one.
How is the key chart kept private?
The chart is handed to a named administrator rather than left as loose paperwork, and it is stored somewhere only that person can reach, separate from day-to-day office records. It is not published, circulated widely or kept alongside general building documents. When the administrator role changes hands, custody of the chart moves with a signed acknowledgement rather than being passed along informally.
Can key duplication be restricted so copies cannot be cut elsewhere?
Yes. With a restricted or patented keyway, blanks are only available through the manufacturer's authorized record, so a copy is not cut at an ordinary hardware counter without going through that channel. This does not make a key impossible to duplicate, but every legitimate copy passes through a record the owner controls, which a standard keyway cannot offer.
